Wai-o-tapu

Wai-o-tapu is 27km outside of Rotorua and is home to some spectacular thermal areas. It's frustrating knowing the colors just won't come through as bold in photos as they are in real life! The smells, colors, and experience of popping mud, billowing steam and hissing of the hot gases as they come to the surface of the water was unlike anything I've experienced before!
Here is one of the mud pits.
The geyser Lady Knox
A portion of a thermal pool known as "the Artist's Palette'- a very fitting name!

The various colors change depending on the predominate minerals in that portion.
The famous Champagne Pool. The waters boil up from the underlying volcanic activity and exceed 200 degrees!
The 'Devil's Bath'... such an intense neon green!!
